About Glattly Pianoforte

Glattly Pianoforte is a piano retail and rebuilding business that is owned and operated by a family that loves music. We are assisted by a few other musician-artisans who, like us, are dedicated to the pursuit of beautiful sound. Together, we share the conviction that in listening we seek the most direct path to the awakening of feeling. We are all grateful to find our work intertwined with this effort.

Rebuilding Service

At Glattly Pianoforte we look to the past and the present to inform our rebuilding process. The past provides us with traditional techniques and materials. The present provides modern engineering improvements that enhance the touch of the action, the redesign of the string set or a new kind of bridge by Wapin®. There are a lot of companies rebuilding high quality grands these days but our work stands out. There are many examples of our rebuilding work and concert piano preparation to be heard throughout the performance season in and around Rochester, New York. Professional musicians and piano technicians alike have made word-of-mouth our primary form of advertisement.

Our Background

Glattly Pianoforte was started by Chris Glattly in 1983. After studying with Owen Jorgenson at Michigan State University he received a B.A. in music. Moving to Rochester, NY., he worked at the Eastman School of Music under Joseph Balconi and started a private tuning and concert technician business. In 1988, Chris left the Eastman School to start a rebuilding business in Canandaigua, NY with his wife and fellow MSU graduate, Jill Glattly. The unusual complement of concert stage experience and piano remanufacturing has produced a succession of rebuilt pianos and new piano selections in the Rochester area's concert halls, auditoriums, studios, and homes. See pictures in our Restoration Gallery.

Piano Refinishing

Our professional refinishing shop can produce a factory level full-rub satin sheen or repair an old finish as your budget dictates. The talent of Mike Ingersoll, who managed the Mason & Hamlin shop, in concert with Kip Powell and others have, between them 30 years of experience in factory and private piano refinishing shops. Professional refinishing doesn't have to be just for professional venues.
